IT’S TIME FOR SCHOOL PHYSICALS, ARE YOU READY?
July 8, 2016There are three main reasons why you, as a parent, should embrace a physical exam as part of the preparation for this new school year. Whether mandatory by Schools or recommended by a sports team, a physical exam will determinate your kid’s overall health, asses any existing medical or behavioral conditions and, provide tips and tools designed to lessen stress and make the most out the New School Year.
Determine your kid’s overall health – It is important to ensure that your child is in good physical and mental health to participate and enjoy in all school’s activities. During the child’s screen, a pediatrician will review the medical and immunization history, record height and weight, take blood pressure, examine heart, lungs, ears, nose, throat, and asses your child’s mobility while addressing any social concerns.
Address any existing condition – The key is to address existing conditions with a qualified physician who is experienced with children. A Pediatrician can uncover potential health problems that could worsen during school year, prescribe medications if needed, and, prepare and give tips and tools to manage conditions while away from home. For example, Dr. Medina at SuperKids Pediatrics in Palm Beach Gardens, prepares an Asthma Action Plan for children with asthma. This plan lists medications your child should take and how often, what to do if symptoms worsen, and, when to seek medical attention right away. Parents should give a copy to their child’s teachers, counselor, and coaches so they also know what to do.
Provide tips – A pediatrician’s goal is to reduce the risk of potential injury or re-injury, address the vision, hearing and social behavioral health of your child. This helps accomplish the best outcome while making the school experiences more enjoyable. Scheduling a physical exam ahead of time can guaranty time for your pediatrician to discuss tips, give training and cover any concerns. It also plays an important role in sharing information among the pediatrician, school administrators, parents and school care providers.
