Why is a Camp/Sport Physical Exam so important this Summer?

May 1, 2016

Going to camp can be a great and unforgettable experience for children and summer in Palm Beach, is full of options when it comes to your child’s development, both physical and emotional.

There are three main reasons why you, as a parent, should embrace a physical exam as part of the preparation for summer time.  Whether mandatory or recommended by Camps, Schools or a Super KidsSports team, a physical exam will determinate your kid’s overall health, asses any existing medical conditions and, provide tips and tools that reduce the likelihood of injury and lessen stress.

Determine your Kid’s overall health

It is important to ensure that your child is in good physical health to participate and enjoy camp activities like swimming, hiking, sports, and many other typical summer activities.  During the child’s screen, a pediatrician will review the medical and immunization history, record height and weight, take blood pressure, examine heart, lungs, ears, nose, throat, and asses your child’s mobility while addressing any concerns.

Address any existing condition

It is very important to address existing conditions with a qualified physician who is experienced with children.  A Pediatrician can uncover potential health problems that could worsen at camp, prescribe medications if needed and prepare and give tips and tools to manage conditions while away from home.  For example, at SuperKids Pediatrics, we prepare an Asthma Action Plan for children with this condition.  This plan lists medications your child should take and how often, what to do if symptoms get worse, and when to seek medical attention right away.  Parents should give a copy to their child’s counselor, teacher or coaches and office staff so they also know what to do.

Provide Tips & Tools

A pediatrician goal is to reduce the risk of potential injury or re-injury to your child while away from home, making outdoor summer experiences more enjoyable. Another goal is to prevent the spread of diseases and outbreaks in our community.

Scheduling a physical exam ahead of time can guaranty time for your pediatrician to discuss tips, give training and cover any concerns regarding specific activities, helping your child stay safe and healthy. It also plays an important role in sharing information among the pediatrician, camp administrators and parents.
